Harry Potter fans online have a lot of thoughts about the HBO show’s first teaser trailer for “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” Much of the reaction is pretty positive, while some of the reactions are, well, less so. HBO dropped a two-minute trailer that pulled back the veil on its new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series. The trailer quickly introduced all the major characters — including Harry (Dominic McLaughlin), Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton), Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout), Albus Dumbledore (John Lithgow), Severus Snape (Paapa Essiedu) and Minerva McGonagall (Janet McTeer). The Potter reboot is a hugely important big bet for HBO, so even this first blush reaction from fans can matter. Leading up to the trailer, the fandom seemed split: Some were very excited by the idea of HBO doing a deeper dive into Rowling’s books that fleshed out the story in ways the Warner Bros. films could not. Others took a “I love the movies and don’t need this” stance. Still others were ready to slam the project for various reasons (such as Rowling’s trans views, or gripes about Snape being played by a Black actor). The show will be released this Christmas.
Netflix just dropped a look at Apex, and it’s basically “nature hike gone horribly wrong…with a psychopath.” The film stars Charlize Theron as a grieving rock climber trying to reset her life in the Australian wilderness. Instead, she ends up getting hunted for sport by Taron Egerton. The setup: she’s out there testing her limits, and suddenly the real test becomes survival. Egerton plays the kind of guy you absolutely do not want making eye contact with you in the woods—calm, calculating, and treating humans like a weekend hobby. Apex hits Netflix April 24.
Chuck Norris, longtime actor and martial artist, has died, his family said in a statement Friday. He was 86.
“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the family said. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
Norris was hospitalized in Hawaii earlier this week after an undisclosed medical emergency, according to TMZ.
“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family,” the family said. “He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.”
The family added: “While our hearts are broken, we are deeply grateful for the life he lived and for the unforgettable moments we were blessed to share with him. The love and support he received from fans around the world meant so much to him, and our family is truly thankful for it. To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends.”
Norris, who turned 86 on March 10, posted an Instagram video on his birthday showing him sparring with a trainer.
“I don’t age. I level up,” he wrote in a caption. “I’m 86 today! Nothing like some playful action on a sunny day to make you feel young. I’m grateful for another year, good health, and the chance to keep doing what I love. Thank you all for being the best fans in the world. Your support through the years has meant more to me than you’ll ever know.”
Born Carlos Ray Norris in Ryan, Oklahoma, he learned martial arts while serving in the U.S. Air Force in South Korea in the late 1950s.
After returning to the United States, Norris competed in martial arts competitions and opened his own studio, training celebrity clients including Steve McQueen.
Norris got his first big break in Hollywood in 1972, appearing opposite Bruce Lee in Way of the Dragon.
He went on to star in a steady stream martial arts movies and action films, including Breaker! Breaker! (1977), Good Guys Wear Black (1978), A Force of One (1979), The Octagon (1980), An Eye for an Eye (1981), Silent Rage (1982) and Missing in Action (1984), Missing in Action 2 (1985), The Delta Force (1986) and Firewalker (1986).
His television career took off in 1993 with the debut of Walker, Texas Ranger. The show ran for eight full seasons on CBS.
Norris continued making films during and after TV success. The last mainstream movie he appeared in was The Expendables 2, in 2012.
He also appeared with Christie Brinkley in a long-running series of cable TV infomercials promoting fitness equipment.
Sean Penn skipped the Academy Awards—not because he lost… but because he had somewhere else to be. Penn actually won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, making it Oscar number three. Problem? He wasn’t in the building. While Kieran Culkin cracked a joke onstage about accepting it for him, Penn was across the world walking the streets of Kyiv. Turns out, he chose to be in Ukraine showing support during the ongoing war instead of attending Hollywood’s biggest night. And this isn’t a one-off—Penn’s been all-in on Ukraine for years. He even handed Volodymyr Zelenskyy one of his own Oscars back in 2022 after Russia invaded.
Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that a long-planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been scrapped by Hulu—and the timing couldn’t have been worse. Gellar got the call just minutes before taking the stage at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of her new movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, marking her first major big-screen appearance in nearly two decades. The reboot had been in development for several years with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao and even filmed a pilot. The plan was to bring Buffy Summers back alongside a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Gellar says she loved the direction of the show, but claims the project faced an uphill battle because one key executive involved wasn’t even a fan of the original series and openly admitted he had never watched it. The cancellation stunned everyone involved—including executives connected to the project—and Gellar says she’s disappointed for the fans who pushed for Buffy’s return for years. Despite the setback, she says the legacy of the show remains strong, adding that her former co-stars—including David Boreanaz—quickly reached out in support. And while the reboot is dead for now, insiders say the door may still be open for Buffy to rise again someday.
