Here's How Much Keith Hernandez Still Makes In "Seinfeld" Residuals
Keith Hernandez is still getting paid for a joke about spit… more than 30 years later. The former Mets star and current broadcaster revealed he still pulls in about $5,000 a year in residuals from his guest spot on Seinfeld — specifically the classic 1992 two-parter “The Boyfriend.” That’s the episode where Hernandez played himself in a bizarre love triangle with Jerry Seinfeld and Elaine Benes, while also getting dragged into one of the show’s most ridiculous storylines — the infamous “Magic Loogie” conspiracy. In true Seinfeld fashion, the whole thing spiraled into a parody of the John F. Kennedy assassination, with Kramer and Newman obsessing over whether Hernandez spit on someone after a game. (Spoiler: he didn’t.) Hernandez only appeared in those two episodes — plus a silent cameo in the 1998 finale — but the impact clearly stuck. The episodes were a hit, even earning a Writers Guild nomination, and now they’re basically a small annual paycheck that never goes away. So while he’s busy calling Mets games today, Hernandez is also quietly cashing sitcom checks from 1992.
