Kelly Clarkson Never Got Her Car After Winning 'Idol'
Turns out winning the very first season of American Idol didn’t come with quite the jackpot people thought—at least according to Kelly Clarkson. While chatting with Rob Rausch—fresh off winning The Traitors—and Daniel Radcliffe on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson revealed the prizes she was promised back in 2002 didn’t exactly show up. Rausch mentioned he still hadn’t been paid his $220,800 prize from The Traitors, and Clarkson immediately said she could relate. She explained that the “$1 million” she supposedly won wasn’t really cash—it was more like a million dollars worth of investment in launching her career. Then came the bigger gripe: the car. Clarkson says the show promised one, and she really needed it at the time because her own car had been damaged and she couldn’t afford the insurance deductible. But according to Clarkson, that car never arrived. To add insult to injury, she said runner-up Clay Aiken from Season 2 ended up getting a car—along with one for his mom—which left Clarkson stunned. Meanwhile, later Idol winners seemed to get the goods. Carrie Underwood says she still owns the blue Ford Mustang convertible she received after winning Season 4, calling it a reminder of the moment that launched her career.
