Elizabeth Holmes Arrives at Federal Prison in Texas to Begin 11-Year Sentence

Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of blood-testing company Theranos, turned herself in Tuesday to begin serving out her 11-year, three-month prison sentence, the Bureau of Federal Prisons confirms to PEOPLE.

Holmes, 39, reported to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, a minimum-security prison facility that houses 655 female offenders. The prison is about 100 miles from Houston, where she grew up.

According to its handbook, inmates will have job assignments as well as opportunities to participate in wellness programs, religious services, and recreation activities.

Holmes was convicted in 2022 on four counts of fraud in connection with her medical startup that duped investors out of millions of dollars.

Holmes’ attorneys filed a 132-page appeal earlier this year asking for a reduction in prison time after claiming the conviction was unjust and that Holmes did not intend to deceive investors, PEOPLE previously reported.

"The government's case largely parroted the public narrative," the appeal says. "The government put front and center the claim that Holmes knowingly and intentionally misrepresented to investors the capabilities of Theranos's technology."

Her request to stay out of prison while she appeals the conviction was denied.

Holmes gave birth to her second child in April.

In a sentencing memo, her partner, hotel heir Billy Evans, asked the court to give Holmes a lighter sentence, saying she would miss out on milestone moments with the pair’s two young children, The Mercury News reported.

According to the prison handbook, Holmes will be allowed 300 minutes of calling time per month granted in 15-minute allotments, as well as the opportunity for video calls.

Her family will be allowed to visit her at least four hours per month, "but usually the prison can provide more," the prison website states.

Holmes first rose to prominence in 2014 as the founder and CEO of Theranos, which tricked investors by falsely purporting that its technology could run hundreds of medical tests using just a few drops of blood.

Holmes was tried on 11 counts of fraud for claims made to investors and patients of her Silicon Valley company. The jury found Holmes guilty of four of the charges — three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Paramore Singer Curses Out Desantis Supporters During Show

"Paramore" lead singer Hayley Williams savaged her political opponents during a performance over the weekend, telling any potential Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., voters in the crowd "you’re f------ dead to me." Williams, co-founder of the band, apparently took the opportunity at the Adjacent Music Festival in Atlantic City, New Jersey Saturday to respond to her online critics who claimed she is not vocal enough politically. In between songs during Paramore’s set, the singer reassured fans, "I’ll be happy to tell you I’m very f------ comfortable talking politics." To prove it, she ripped into crowd goers thinking about voting for DeSantis in the 2024 presidential race. "And if you vote for Ron DeSantis, you’re f------ dead to me!" she said. The crowd loved the line, screaming in wild adulation.

Tom Hanks Urges Harvard Grads To Defend The Truth And Resist Indifference

Tom Hanks told graduates of Harvard University yesterday to be superheroes in their defense of truth and American ideals, and to resist those who twist the truth for their own gain. “For the truth to some is no longer empirical. It’s no longer based on data, nor common sense, nor even common decency,” said Hanks during his keynote address. He invoked the Latin word for truth, “veritas,” Harvard’s motto. “Telling the truth is no longer the benchmark for public service,” he said. “It’s no longer the salve to our fears, or the guide to our actions. Truth is now considered malleable, by opinion and by zero sum endgames.” “It’s the same option for all grownups who have to decide to be one of three types of Americans: Those who embrace liberty and freedom for all; those who won’t; or those who are indifferent,” he said. “Only the first do the work of creating a more perfect union, a nation indivisible. The others get in the way.”

Whoopi Goldberg Blames American Idol For Downfall Of Society And Is Reminded It's On Her Network

On “The View” yesterday, the women talked about a new documentary from Netflix that examines the final days of model Anna Nicole Smith’s life, titled Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me. As they questioned why audiences are encapsulated by stories like that, Goldberg offered up her own theory. “We as a society, love to watch stuff to judge folks. You know, I’ve always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society — was with — what’s the name of that show? I always tell you that,” Goldberg said, motioning to executive producer Brian Teta off-camera. “ABC’s American Idol,” Teta said cautiously, as the audience began to laugh. “It was not always on ABC. When it began, it was on another network,” Goldberg said, referencing Fox. Goldberg continued to share her theory. “I’m gonna tell you why, because once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amuck with it and it’s gone out of control,” Goldberg said, noting that although there are judges on the show, the audience ultimately decides.

Could Oprah Winfrey Replace Dianne Feinstein In The Senate

According to the Associated Press, there are reports suggesting that California Governor Gavin Newsom is contemplating the possibility of appointing Oprah Winfrey to the Senate if Dianne Feinstein were to retire before completing her term. In his commitment to appoint a black woman to the position, Newsom is considering Oprah as one of the potential contenders. By appointing Oprah, Newsom would avoid potentially influencing the outcome of California's heated primary race in 2024. In this scenario, Oprah would serve as a temporary placeholder, not intending to pursue the seat for a full six-year term.

Queen of Rock 'n' Roll Tina Turner Dead at 83 After 'Long Illness': Rep

Tina Turner, whose volcanic voice and dynamic dance moves earned her the Queen of Rock crown over the course of a 60-year career, has died at age 83.

The legendary singer died Wednesday, May 24 after a long illness at her home near Zurich in Switzerland, her publicist Bernard Doherty confirmed in a statement.

"Tina Turner, the "Queen of Rock'n Roll" has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model," the statement read. "There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family. Please respect the privacy of her family at this difficult time."

Since 1994 the American-born singer had been living in Switzerland with her husband, German actor and music producer Erwin Bach, earning her Swiss citizenship in 2013. In recent years she battled a number of serious health problems, including a stroke, intestinal cancer and total kidney failure that required an organ transplant.

Boasting one of the longest careers in rock history, Turner scored Billboard Top 40 hits across four decades, earning her Grammys, a Kennedy Center Honor, and entry into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Most recently, Turner was the focal point of an HBO documentary on her life titled Tina.

Turner's incendiary singing, glittery stage-wear and seemingly inexhaustible energy as the frontwoman for the Ike & Tina Turner Revue made her and her then-husband one of the most electrifying acts of the 1960s, serving up high octane covers of "Proud Mary," "Come Together," and "I Want to Take You Higher."

Striking out on her own as a solo artist in the '70s, Turner reinvented herself as a star of the MTV age, notching hits with "What's Love Got to Do with It," "The Best," and "Private Dancer" — becoming one of the highest-selling female artists on the planet in the process.

Turner's early years were marred by her tumultuous marriage to musical partner Ike Turner, who subjected her to brutal acts of physical and psychological abuse. (He died in 2007.) Her survival and harrowing escape was dramatized in the 1993 film What's Love Got to Do with It starring Angela Bassett.

Born Anna Mae Bullock on Nov. 26, 1939 in the town of Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner began singing in a Baptist church choir. Her childhood was not a happy one; at the age of 11 her mother left home in an effort to flee her abusive husband. Two years later, when Turner was a teen, her father married another woman and left the state, leaving Turner and her sisters in the care of her grandmother.

Turner would meet her future husband Ike in the late 1950s, when he was performing on the St. Louis club circuit with his band, Kings of Rhythm. He was 25 years old, and Turner was just 17.

"Ike wasn't conventionally handsome," she wrote in her 2018 memoir My Love Story. "Actually, he wasn't handsome at all — and he certainly wasn't my type. I was used to high school boys who were clean-cut, athletic, and dressed in denim, so Ike's processed hair, diamond ring, and skinny body looked old to me, even though he was only 25. I couldn't help thinking, 'God, he's ugly.'"

Tina became a member of the band, and after a relationship with the sax player, Raymond Hill — which resulted in the birth of her first son, Craig, in 1958 — her association with Ike took a romantic turn. Even when she became pregnant with his child, business was never far from his mind. After the band's first studio recording with Tina netted Ike $25,000, he sensed an opportunity that had nothing to do with love. "My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his money-maker," Tina later wrote. "He needed to control me, economically and psychologically, so I could never leave him."

Around this time, Ike gave the future superstar her famous moniker — against her wishes. "Tina" was inspired by a character in a favorite television show. He also insisted she take his surname, implying both marriage and a certain degree of ownership. In fact, he even trademarked the name "Tina Turner."

Tina Turner Felt Love at First Sight with Husband Erwin Bach: I Knew a 'Soul Has Met'
Their son Ronnie was born in October 1960, and the couple made their union official two years later with a quickie ceremony in Tijuana. Ronnie died of complications of colon cancer in December at age 62.

Her marriage to Ike did little to stabilize their partnership, and the pressures of growing fame contributed to the tensions. "Our life together was a mockery of a 'normal' relationship: defined by abuse and fear, not love, or even affection," she wrote.

That same year, Ike penned a new song for his band called "A Fool in Love." When the intended singer failed to show up for the session, he asked Turner to sing a "guide" vocal for a demo. The result was deemed strong enough for release that July, earning them a Top 40 hit.

So began a string of early R&B smashes including "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" (which earned them a Grammy), "I Idolize You" and "I Can't Believe What You Say." At the behest of Ike, they toured extensively when the hits started drying up, sometimes doing stretches of 90 dates at a time under the Ike & Tina Turner Revue banner.

They maintained a breakneck pace with frequent appearances on rock 'n' roll television shows like Hollywood a Go Go, American Bandstand and Shindig! and concert films like The Big T.N.T. Show.

Even without a hit, their raw energy attracted the attention of many famous and powerful fans, including superproducer Phil Spector, who signed them to his label. Their bombastic 1966 single "River Deep — Mountain High" fizzled in the lower regions of the charts, but it caught the attention of the Rolling Stones, who tapped the Revue to serve as their opening act on their tour that fall, paving their way to more high profile gigs and appearances on television.

By the dawn of the '70s the married duo had begun issuing funked-up covers, including the Beatles' "Come Together," Sly Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher" and famously, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," which soared to No. 4 in 1971 and would become one of Turner's signature songs.

As their star status increased, so too did Ike's abuse and controlling nature. "There was violence because he had this fear that I was going to leave him," Turner said in 2018. Ironically, it was Ike who had extramarital affairs. "The other women, because I didn't love him that way… the other women weren't so bad, but it was the constant, constant ill-treatment."

Following years of torment, Turner famously fled her husband in 1976 with nothing but a Mobil card and 36 cents in her pocket. She made her escape while the pair were on tour, staying at the Statler Hilton in Dallas, Texas. "I just took a chance," she recalled in 2017. "I said, 'The way out is through the door' and while he was on one of his sleeping times, I just left the hotel, went out the kitchen way and down to the freeway."

Despite the immense risk, Turner never looked back. "I walked out without anything and had to make it on my own for my family and everyone so I just went back to work for myself," she remembered. "It was very difficult and dangerous because Ike was a violent person and at that point he was on drugs and very insecure. I had no money. I had no place to go."

From there, she rebuilt her career, playing solo gigs for the first time in decades, and going head to head with her soon-to-be ex-husband in the courts and she sought custody of her kids — and her name.

"I told the judge, 'It's only blood money. I want nothing,'" she wrote. "I did have one request. I wanted to continue using the name 'Tina Turner,' which Ike owned. I walked out of that courtroom with the name Tina Turner and my two Jaguars, one from Sammy Davis, Jr. and one from Ike, and that's it. It seems so funny now — no money for food or rent, but two Jaguars! Considering my age, 39, my gender, my color, and the times we lived in, everything was strong winds against me."

But she came back stronger than ever. The '80s would see her score hits like "What's Love Got to Do with It," "Private Dancer," and "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)," and videos on a nascent MTV made her a star for a whole new generation — and transformed her into a global icon. Her 1984 solo disc Private Dancer earned four Grammy Awards and eventually sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

Her success continued through the '90s, during which time Turner released a pair of high-selling albums, sang the theme to the James Bond film GoldenEye, and was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

But aside from music, it was also a time for reflection. She published her memoir, I, Tina, and saw her story come to life on the big screen with What's Love Got to Do with It.

In 2008 she announced that her Tina! 50th Anniversary Tour would also be her last, and from that point on she largely retired from the music industry. She began to focus more on her private life, notably her relationship with German actor and music producer Erwin Bach. After decades together, the pair married in 2013.

In 2018, she made one of her last public appearances, dropping in at the premiere of the London musical based on her life story, Tina, which details every turbulent moment of her 50-year singing career.

"I've been blessed with a wonderful career," she wrote in the show's program, "and after more than 50 years of performing I don't need a musical, I don't need another show. But I get so many cards and letters — I still can't believe how people feel about me on stage and the legacy they say I left. People tell me I gave them hope. It meant so much to people I feel I have to pass it on, and I hope this show serves what the people need, as a reminder of my work."

Most recently, she was interviewed in an HBO documentary, which was released in March 2021.

"I had an abusive life," she said in the documentary, which was laced with exclusive footage and interviews with Turner and other important members of her life. "There's no other way to tell the story. Buddhism was a way out."

"I started really seeing that I had to make a change. Divorce, I got nothing. No money, no house. So I said, I'll just take my name," she added.

Jeff Bezos Is Engaged to Lauren Sánchez: Source

Wedding bells will ring for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

The Amazon founder, 59, is engaged to the Emmy-winning journalist, 53, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

The happy news came as the couple are on vacation together in the South of France. Over the weekend, the pair were photographed enjoying a cheeky outing and attended the premiere of Apple Original Films' "Killers of the Flower Moon" at the Cannes Film Festival.

The helicopter pilot was also seen rocking a ring on that finger on Sunday while they spent time together on the billionaire's $500 million yacht named Koru. The same yacht features a wooden sculpture made in the likeness of Sánchez. Attached to the ship's prow, the design includes a necklace featuring the symbol for Koru, which is M?ori for loop or coil. It's based on the spiral shape of an unfurling silver fern frond — a symbol that is special to the couple.

Koru symbolizes new beginnings — which Bezos has cited before on his Instagram — and a new phase of life, positive change, personal growth, and hope for the future.

The newly engaged couple took their relationship public in January 2019, after Bezos announced his divorce from MacKenzie Scott, with whom he shares four children, after 25 years of marriage.

At the time, the former Good Day LA co-host was also divorcing her husband of 13 years, Patrick Whitesell. Sánchez has two children with the agent as well as a son from a previous relationship with former NFL star Tony Gonzalez.

Over the years, Bezos and Sánchez have continued to grow together, with the couple going on family vacations, advocating for climate change and packing on the PDA.

"Happy birthday to the man of my dreams, who lights up my world with his laughter and kind heart. You have shown me that no great love is not bravely fought for," Sánchez wrote in a loving post in honor of his birthday in January.

"I am so grateful for the memories we have made and the adventures yet to come," she added. "Here's to many more birthdays filled with love and laughter."

Since stepping down as CEO of Amazon in February 2021, Bezos has focused his efforts on conservation and his space exploration company, Blue Origin. Sánchez has been with him each step of the way, and the pair are both dedicated to their work for the Bezos Earth Fund, an initiative they launched to help fight climate change, which she co-chairs.

Back in November, during a joint interview, the Amazon founder told CNN he plans to give away most of his $124 billion fortune in his lifetime, focusing primarily on fighting climate change and supporting others who can help improve the deep divide over social and political issues.

"The hard part is figuring out how to do it in a levered way," he said of his philanthropic strategy. "It's not easy. Building Amazon was not easy. It took a lot of hard work, a bunch of very smart teammates, hard-working teammates, and I'm finding — and I think Lauren is finding the same thing — that charity, philanthropy, is very similar."

Sánchez added that they make "really great teammates."

Paramount+ With Showtime Confirms Rebrand Launch Date

Paramount has officially announced the launch plans for the combined Paramount+ and Showtime service, revealing the date as June 27. This confirmation follows the accidental leak of the launch date via an email sent to Apple-paid Showtime subscribers a few days ago. The merger, currently applicable only in the U.S., stems from the previous announcement in January that Showtime would no longer operate as an independent brand. The rebranded bundle, known as Paramount+ with Showtime, will be available at a monthly cost of $11.99. In comparison, Paramount+ without Showtime will be priced at $5.99. It's important to note that the combined offering is $2 more expensive than the existing premium plan of Paramount+, which currently does not include Showtime content. Additionally, the new bundle is $1 pricier than the "Essential" plan without Showtime.

Nick Cannon Tried To Talk To Kanye West Amid Antisemitism Controversy

Nick Cannon tried to reach out to Kanye West after he made antisemitic comments. "Kanye is saying some wild s**t, and I don't know if he really believes it," Nick said. "I tried to talk to him. I tried to put him with leaders in the Jewish community. I think it's a lot more there. I just know he's in desperate need of help and love and people to not abandon him."

Fox was asked by Goldberg if he had any regrets about acting roles he had walked away from in the past. “There was a chance to work with you that I missed,” he said. “They talked to me about Ghost early on. Sting Warns Against AI Songs

Sting says musicians face a battle to defend their work against the rise of songs written by artificial intelligence. He told the BBC: "The building blocks of music belong to us, to human beings. That's going to be a battle we all have to fight in the next couple of years: Defending our human capital against AI." His comments come after a number of songs have used artificial intelligence to "clone" famous artists' vocals. "It's similar to the way I watch a movie with CGI. It doesn't impress me at all," Sting said. "I get immediately bored when I see a computer-generated image. I imagine I will feel the same way about AI making music. Maybe for electronic dance music, it works. But for songs, you know, expressing emotions, I don't think I will be moved by it."

Roseanne Barr Says She Was Betrayed By Former Onscreen Daughter Sara Gilbert

Roseanne Barr has opened up about feeling betrayed by former costar Sara Gilbert, who played her daughter on her cancelled sitcom Roseanne. In an interview with Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM show, Barr unleashed on Gilbert, saying she stabbed her in the back and repeatedly twisted it. “It was her tweet that cancelled the show,” Barr explained of Gilbert, referencing the 2018 cancellation of the Roseanne reboot. ABC pulled the plug on the show after Barr shared a racist tweet about former presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett. “And then she tweeted ‘It's sad when one cast member...’ — something about racist, blah, blah. And I was floored. I was just floored,” she continued. “And you know, but she ends up owning my work and Tom Werner becomes her partner in owning my work.” Sara, who was an executive producer of the Roseanne revival and had played Darlene Conner for the entirety of the series, called Barr's tweets “abhorrent.”
