LEONARDTOWN, MD – The Commissioners of St. Mary's County (CSMC) began their business meeting with an invocation and the pledge, followed by approval of the consent agenda.
As part of the consent agenda, the CSMC authorized a letter of support for the Friends of St. Clement’s Island and Piney Point Museum’s Maritime Grant application from the Maryland Historical Trust.
The Commissioners then presented a proclamation recognizing Jim Dicus, Jamie Thomas, and Jeff Thomas for their decades of leadership and volunteer service supporting the Run & Fun Walk for Hospice.
The CSMC then presented commendations to St. Mary’s County Library employees who volunteered to open and staff a cooling center on a scheduled holiday.
For their main agenda items, the Commissioners took the following action:
- Approved the resolution authorizing execution of a cable franchise agreement between the CSMC and Verizon Maryland, LLC.
- Disapproved the proposed text amendments modifying development standards for Use Type 60 (Fuel Sales) and creating new Use Types 76A (Small Box Discount Stores) and 77A (Vape Shops) with corresponding standards and referred the amendment to the Planning Commission for further review.
- Approved the proposed Community Reinvestment and Repair ordinance.
During County Administrator Time, the CSMC took the following action:
- Reviewed future CSMC meeting agendas.
- Approved the loan request for the Second District Volunteer Fire Department.
- Approved the Adult Recovery Court Program and Family Recovery Court award from the Office of Problem-Solving Courts.
- Approved the MACRO Alternative Dispute Resolution Program grant award from the Administrative Office of Courts.
- Approved the Family Services Program award from the Administrative Office of Courts.
- Approved the FY2027 Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant application.
- Approved the Department of Recreation’s request to reorganize two open positions:
- Senior Groundskeeper to Shop Foreman
- Fiscal Specialist IV to Coordinator II
- Authorized county staff to procure a second appraisal for the Bushwood Wharf property.
- Approved the workforce development study budget amendment.
- Approved the Lexington Park Development District Implementation Plan budget amendment and ratified the contract with Clarion Associates.
The Commissioners then wrapped up their business meeting with Commissioner Time.
The Sheriff's Office Support Services Facility Groundbreaking Ceremony, scheduled for today at 2 p.m., was postponed due to forecasted inclement weather. The ceremony has been rescheduled for Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 2 p.m.
In the evening, the Commissioners reconvened at 6:30 p.m. to host a Public Forum.
There will be no CSMC meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, or Tuesday, August 11, 2026. The next CSMC Meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 9 a.m. in the CSMC Meeting Room, on the first floor of the Chesapeake Building, located at 41770 Baldridge Street in Leonardtown.
