Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate Opening of New Cove Point Playground

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – July 21, 2026 – The Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, July 28, at 3 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Cove Point Playground at the front of Cove Point Park, 750 Cove Point Road, Lusby.

Residents are encouraged to attend this free, family-friendly event.

The new playground features accessible equipment that meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and several inclusive play elements designed to ensure children of all abilities can play together. Accessible features include poured-in-place surfacing throughout the playground, a wide concrete path that provides access to and encircles the playground, a user-powered Spin Station that allows users with mobility devices to play without transferring from their device and a Cozy Cocoon designed for children who desire a quiet place. The Cozy Cocoon also spins and includes interior tactile experiences to help children relax, making it especially beneficial for neurodivergent children.

Additional play features include a shaded Play Hill with an agility trail and Mighty Descent slide, a play mound featuring a megalodon shark skeleton and fossils inspired by those found at nearby Calvert Cliffs, a play unit designed for children younger than age 5 and a large play structure with Sky Towers and slides. Additional opportunities for swinging, spinning and balancing, along with shaded seating, were incorporated based on community feedback received from nearly 1,000 residents through a fall 2025 survey.

“The new Cove Point Playground is designed to provide a fun, safe space where children of all abilities can play and learn together,” said Parks & Recreation Director Robert Branham.

The new playground is part of the county's ongoing commitment to providing high-quality recreational amenities that promote healthy, active lifestyles and enhance the quality of life for residents.
