On Tuesday, May 21, Barbara Farmer, Community Development Supervisor, presented a draft resolution for a Proposed Community Development Block Grant to Acquire Land for an Affordable Housing Development in La Plata, which would be built by Osprey Properties. A public hearing on the proposed grant was originally held on May 7, 2024, and the record was held for two weeks for additional input from residents. Commissioners voted 3-2 to approve the resolution.
- Meg Romero, Recycling and Litter Control Superintendent, and Frances Sherman, Chief of Environmental Resources, updated commissioners on Keep Charles County Beautiful Initiatives. The county participated in the Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup on Saturday, April 6, and hosted the Charles County Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 18. The community cleanup rained out on May 18, and participating sites made arrangements for alternate event days. Residents can continue participation through the Adopt-a-Road and Adopt-a-Spot programs. Future litter control initiatives include establishing full-time litter control crews to mitigate trash found in area roadsides.
- Jason Groth, Acting Director of the Department of Planning and Growth Management, updated commissioners on a draft policy and procedures document for Developer Bond Releases. Groth stated that the department spoke with local and regional stakeholders on an approach for the policy. A formal recommendation on guidelines is expected before the end of July.
Annual Updates
Commissioners received updates on the activities of the Charles County Pension Plan Committee, The Sheriff’s Office Retirement Plan (SORP) Committee, the Other Post Employment Benefits Committee and the Historic Preservation Commission.
Commissioners approved:
- A budget amendment increase of $198,500 to support renovations for the county’s new rental space on Stonehaven Place. The site will hold additional office space for the Department of Emergency Services, Planning & Growth Management, and the Economic Development Department.
- A change to the Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) Plan to replace an investment fund.
- A letter of support for the Piscataway Conoy Cultural Museum.
- A change in funding method to the Charles County Pension Plan.
