Universal has released the first 15?second teaser for The Exorcist: Martyrs, the upcoming reboot directed by modern?horror heavyweight Mike Flanagan and led by Scarlett Johansson. The full trailer arrives tomorrow, but even this quick preview is already making noise — mostly because it leans heavily into gritty, psychological dread reminiscent of Se7en rather than traditional demonic?possession horror. Johansson stars as a single?mother cop who witnesses the execution of a notorious satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday — played by John Leguizamo. But after his death, his crimes continue supernaturally, targeting her 12?year?old son and pulling her into an investigation that forces priests to join the case. The tone is bleak, grounded, and crime?thriller heavy, with Flanagan describing the film as “viciously dark” and emotionally intense in ways he’s never explored on set before. The cast is stacked: Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Hamish Linklater, Carl Lumbly, and Carla Gugino all appear in supporting roles. Flanagan wrote and directed the film, continuing his run as one of the most influential horror creators of the last decade — known for Hush, Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass, and The Haunting of Hill House. The Exorcist: Martyrs hits theaters on March 12, 2027.
