Patrick Dempsey Says He Gave Real Thought To U.S. Senate Run In Maine, But Decided Against It
Patrick Dempsey says he seriously considered running for the U.S. Senate in Maine but has decided against it. In an op-ed, the actor said he believes he can make a bigger impact through his existing work, including the Dempsey Center, rather than by holding public office. His name had surfaced as a possible Democratic replacement for Senate nominee Graham Platner, whose campaign has been thrown into turmoil following a sexual assault allegation that he denies. While Platner has paused his campaign, he has not officially withdrawn. Dempsey used his announcement to call for leaders who prioritize humility, honesty, empathy, and public service, saying elected office should be about improving people's lives—not seeking power. With the deadline for replacing the Democratic nominee approaching, several other Maine political figures are reportedly considering the race.
