"Donkey": Eddie Murphy Shrek Spinoff Sets Summer 2028 Release
The lovable, fast-talking Donkey from the Shrek franchise is officially getting his own movie. Eddie Murphy previously hinted that a Donkey spinoff was in development, and now DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have confirmed the project will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. The animated film will serve as an origin story, exploring how Donkey became the wisecracking character fans met in the Shrek movies. Murphy previously revealed that the story will also include Donkey's dragon wife and their half-dragon, half-donkey children. The film will be directed by Charlie Bean, known for The Lego Batman Movie, with producer Rebecca Huntley and co-director Matt Flynn. The announcement comes one year before the release of Shrek 5, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2027.
