Snapchat Reportedly In Talks To Pay Robert Downey Jr. Crazy Fee
Snapchat has unveiled its new augmented reality glasses, called Specs, but the high-tech eyewear has already generated plenty of online criticism over its bulky design and hefty price tag. The glasses, which are expected to sell for $2,195 when they launch this fall, were introduced as a device that blends digital content with the real world through see-through lenses. According to reports, Snap is now in talks with Robert Downey Jr. about a potential $100 million stock-based ambassador deal to help promote the product. The move would make sense given Downey's association with Tony Stark in the Marvel movies, where futuristic AR-style glasses and advanced technology were a major part of the character's image. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel says the glasses are designed to create shared real-world experiences without constantly looking down at a phone. However, investors and social media users have been less enthusiastic, with Snap's stock reportedly falling after the announcement and many online commenters poking fun at the glasses' appearance. The company appears hopeful that a high-profile partnership with Downey could help reshape public perception ahead of the product's release.
