Gene Shalit Dead At 100: Iconic Today Show Movie Critic With Bold Mustache Spend 40 Years On The Air

Gene Shalit, the legendary film critic whose trademark bushy mustache and clever reviews became a fixture on NBC's Today show, has died at the age of 100. Shalit's family announced that he passed away peacefully after what they called "100 years of an amazing life." His death comes just three months after celebrating his 100th birthday, a milestone that was recognized on Today by Al Roker. Shalit graduated from the University of Illinois before beginning his career as Dick Clark's press agent and later working as a magazine writer. He joined Today in the 1960s, launching his popular "Critic's Corner" segment in 1968. What started as monthly book reviews evolved into a decades-long run as one of television's most recognizable entertainment critics. Over a 40-year career on the morning show, Shalit worked alongside broadcasting icons including Barbara Walters, Katie Couric, and Matt Lauer. Known for his sharp wit, playful wordplay, and distinctive appearance, Shalit interviewed countless stars over the years, including Carol Channing, Sophia Loren, and Steven Spielberg. For generations of viewers, Gene Shalit wasn't just reviewing movies—he was part of the morning routine.
