Hulu is diving back into the true-crime world with a new three-part docuseries about infamous Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger — and it’ll be narrated by Ben Affleck. The series, currently titled Hunting Whitey Bulger, promises a deep look into the rise, manhunt, capture, and violent death of the notorious gangster who led Boston’s Winter Hill Gang. Bulger became one of America’s most wanted fugitives after his former FBI handler, John Connolly, allegedly tipped him off about an impending indictment. That warning helped Bulger disappear for 16 years before authorities finally tracked him down in 2011. He was later convicted on 31 counts, including racketeering and involvement in 11 murders, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms. In 2018, Bulger was beaten to death in prison just hours after being transferred to a new facility. According to Hulu, the series will feature brand-new reporting, never-before-seen handwritten prison letters, and interviews with key people speaking publicly for the first time. The project aims to tell what it calls the “definitive inside story” behind the hunt for Bulger. Bulger’s life has already inspired multiple Hollywood projects, including The Departed and Black Mass.
