Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Sued By Miami Cops For Defamation Over Their Netflix Movie The Rip
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are catching legal heat over their new Netflix crime thriller The Rip — and this one’s coming from real cops in Miami. The movie, produced by the duo’s company Artists Equity, stars Damon and Affleck as Miami-Dade narcotics officers who uncover corruption after stumbling onto $20 million in cartel cash. The film says it’s “inspired by true events,” but now two actual Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officers say the movie went way too far. Officers Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana have filed a defamation lawsuit, claiming the movie’s main cops — played by Damon and Affleck — are clearly based on them, even though their names aren’t used. According to the lawsuit, the film copies enough specific details from a real 2016 drug-money seizure involving more than $21 million that viewers can easily connect the dots. The officers say the movie paints them as dirty cops who cut corners, act unethically, and even commit violent crimes. One scene reportedly shows Affleck’s character killing a DEA agent. Their attorneys argue the film suggests corruption that never actually happened in real life. The lawsuit claims the fallout has already hit home. The officers say friends, coworkers, and even family members have questioned whether they secretly pocketed seized money to pay for fancy homes, boats, cars, and private schools after seeing the movie. They’re suing for defamation, emotional distress, damages, legal fees, and they want a public correction — including a disclaimer added to the movie making it crystal clear the fictional corruption never happened.
