George Clooney Hits Back At Trump's Calls For Jimmy Kimmel To Be Fired

At the 51st Chaplin Award Gala in New York, George Clooney—honored for his contributions to cinema—addressed the ongoing controversy between President Donald Trump and late?night host Jimmy Kimmel. Clooney arrived with Amal Clooney, who drew attention in a fuchsia off?the?shoulder dress, while he wore a classic black tuxedo. During his remarks, Clooney pushed back on Trump’s renewed demand that ABC fire Kimmel over his joke that Melania Trump had “the glow of an expectant widow.” The joke aired two days before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which was later disrupted by a shooting incident. Trump and Melania have both publicly condemned Kimmel and called for his removal. Clooney argued that Kimmel’s joke—and even White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s remark about “shots fired tonight”—were examples of humor being taken out of context, noting that “jokes are jokes.” But he warned that the broader climate of rhetoric has become “a little dangerous” and increasingly extreme. He added that when political figures label opponents as “traitors”—a charge historically punishable by death—the discourse becomes too heated. Clooney urged that the tone on all sides “can be toned down.”
