2026 Winter Olympics Committee Looking Into Medals Breaking
Some Olympic hardware at the Milan-Cortina Games isn’t holding up quite like the athletes who earned it. The 2026 Winter Olympics organizing committee says it’s investigating reports that a small number of medals have broken after being awarded. The issue surfaced after multiple medalists noticed problems ranging from cracked hardware to ribbons snapping off — often during post-victory celebrations. Team USA downhill skier Breezy Johnson, who won gold, said her medal broke while she was jumping in excitement, jokingly warning others not to celebrate too hard. U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu also showed off a broken medal on social media after the ribbon detached, while teammate Danny O’Shea said he’s been handling his gold carefully to avoid damage. Another teammate, Ellie Kam, said she’s protecting hers by sleeping with it under her pillow. The problem hasn’t been limited to American athletes. German biathlete Justus Strelow was caught on camera trying — and failing — to reattach his broken bronze medal mid-celebration, and Swedish media reported that cross-country skier Ebba Andersson’s silver medal broke after falling into the snow. Organizers say they are taking the issue seriously and acknowledge how meaningful the medals are to the athletes, adding that they are working to address the problem.
