The Oscars Will Move Exclusively To Youtube In Seismic Industry Shift

The Oscars are breaking up with ABC after the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, ending a TV marriage that’s lasted more than 50 years. Starting in 2029, the Academy Awards will move exclusively to YouTube, which locked down a deal running through 2033. The Academy reportedly had other heavy hitters sniffing around, including NBCUniversal and Netflix, but YouTube won the bidding war. The big hook: the Oscars will stream live and free worldwide, including the red carpet, backstage access, and the Governors Ball. The Academy says the move is about accessibility—global reach, multiple languages, closed captioning, and meeting viewers where they already are. And according to Nielsen, that checks out: YouTube has been the most-used connected TV app in the U.S. and internationally for the past two years.
