Austin Butler In Early Talks To Play Sonny Crockett In 'Miami Vice' Movie At Universal
Austin Butler is in early talks to join Michael B. Jordan in Universal’s upcoming Miami Vice movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick). Butler is being eyed for the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, the iconic detective made famous by Don Johnson in the 1980s TV classic. Jordan is set to play Ricardo Tubbs, originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas. Both deals are still being finalized, but scheduling has been arranged for filming to begin later in 2026. The script was most recently written by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), following an earlier draft from Eric Warren Singer, with Dylan Clark and Kosinski producing. Set for release on August 6, 2027, the new Miami Vice will revisit the glamour, danger, and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, drawing inspiration from the original show’s pilot episode and first season — the same series that defined an era of pop-culture style, from pastel suits to sleek speedboats.
