Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) has joined Anthony Ippolito in Amazon MGM’s I Play Rocky, a Peter Farrelly-directed film about the making of the 1977 Best Picture winner Rocky. James will portray Carl Weathers, who famously played Apollo Creed, opposite Ippolito’s Sylvester Stallone. The movie, written by Peter Gamble, follows Stallone’s fight to not only write Rocky but also star in it — betting everything on himself despite constant rejection. Weathers, a former pro football player turned actor, became a franchise staple until Apollo’s death in Rocky IV, with the character’s legacy carried on in Michael B. Jordan’s Creed films.
