Tom Hanks Remembers Late Astronaut James Lovell, Who He Played In Apollo 13

Tom Hanks paid tribute to astronaut James “Jim” Lovell, who died Aug. 7 at age 97. Lovell, a former Navy test pilot, commanded the ill-fated but ultimately safe 1970 Apollo 13 mission — the same mission Hanks portrayed in the 1995 Ron Howard film Apollo 13. In an Instagram post, Hanks praised Lovell as a man who dared, dreamed, and led others into places most wouldn’t go. He highlighted that Lovell’s space voyages, including coming close to the moon, weren’t for fame or fortune but for the challenge itself. Hanks closed his tribute by noting Lovell’s passing on a night with a full moon, saying, “God speed you, on this next voyage.” Lovell famously described Apollo 13 as a “successful failure” for turning near-catastrophe into a safe return. The tribute comes ahead of the 30th anniversary IMAX re-release of Apollo 13 on Sept. 19, which was adapted from Lovell’s own book Lost Moon. The cause of death was not immediately clear. Lovell was already well-known among NASA astronauts — having flown to space on the Gemini 7, Gemini 12 and Apollo 8 missions — before he was selected to command Apollo 13, which would have marked NASA’s third successful crewed moon landing.
