Amal Clooney Faces Threat Of Trump Sanctions
Amal Clooney, the British human rights lawyer and wife of actor George Clooney, could face possible sanctions from the U.S. that might bar her entry into the country—where she and her husband own a home. The warning comes from the UK Foreign Office, which said the Trump administration may target lawyers involved in the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) war crimes case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. While Amal Clooney hasn’t been officially named, she advised the ICC on whether there was enough evidence to charge the Israeli leaders and three Hamas figures with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order sanctioning the ICC and threatened more penalties against those behind what he called “baseless” arrest warrants.
