Dwayne Johnson's 'The Smashing Machine' Trailer Drops
Winning is the best feeling there is. It’s 40,000 people in there cheering you on. There’s no other high like it in the world.” So says Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter brought to life by Dwayne Johnson, in the first trailer for The Smashing Machine, which just dropped. Co-starring Emily Blunt, the wrestling drama hones in on an icon from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC as he struggles with addiction, winning, love and friendship at the peak of his career, in the year 2000. Nicknamed “The Smashing Machine” for his aggressive fighting style, Johnson’s Kerr is a collegiate wrestler turned mixed martial artist who hit the height of his fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s. A two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion, he previously had the highs and lows of his life story dissected in a 2002 HBO documentary. Of particular focus, in terms of the lows, was his struggles with addiction to painkillers, a subject hinted at by the new trailer. The movie hits theaters on October 3.
