As a precaution to rumors about an armed suspect in the area, St. Mary’s public school officials placed Great Mills High School on lockdown yesterday morning. There were no reports of injury, and after an extensive search, the suspect was not found.
St. Mary's sheriff's deputies were looking for Elijah Miguel Miles, 17, of California, wanted in connection with a Tuesday evening shooting incident in the Hickory Hills neighborhood off Chancellor's Run Road, where one male was flown out to an area shock trauma hospital.
Miles was located and arrested in Charles County later Wednesday afternoon. In St. Mary's, Miles is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and firearm used in commission of a felony, according to the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office.
Capt. Steve Hall with the sheriff's office said the school was dismissed at 12:45 p.m. and students were sent home on their assigned buses. He asked parents to call 911 if they should see Miles in the area.
“There’s no confirmation of seeing the suspect” at the high school, Julie Yingling, the sheriff's office public information officer said later.
